Pool Decks – Different Types and Helpful Information You Can Use

Walkway beside the pool

Whether you are a homeowner or a professional, you will encounter many challenges when it comes to building pool decks. You may have seen some of the more common types of decks on television and in magazines, but there are so many more options available that you might not know where to start. You may be asking yourself these questions “What is a pool deck?” and “What pool deck ideas should I choose from?”.

In this article, we will take a look at all of the different types of pool decks and give you useful information that will help you make an informed decision about what type of deck would be best for your project.

What is a pool deck?

A pool deck is a platform built over a swimming pool. It can be made of wood, concrete, or other materials and is often used to create a space for entertaining and relaxing. The use of this type of deck can also increase the value of your home if you decide to sell it later on down the road.

In addition to being a great place to hang out, a pool deck can also help protect pools from damage. It’s important that you choose the right materials for your deck so it will be able to stand up to the elements and last for many years.

Building a pool deck

Building a deck is one of the most rewarding projects you can take on. Not only does it increase the value of your home, but it also adds a lot of enjoyment to your daily routine. Building a deck can be expensive, however, and if you’re not careful, you could end up spending more than you need to or even get hurt in the process.

Read on to learn more about the process in the next section.

How to build a deck around a pool

Building a pool deck is a great way to make your backyard more fun and inviting, but it can be tricky to get right. Here’s our step-by-step process for building a pool deck.

1. First, you’ll need to decide what shape you want your pool deck to be. The best bet is usually something that complements your home’s architecture and aesthetics. But if you’re feeling adventurous, why not build something totally different?

2. Next, you’ll need to decide how many levels your deck will have. If you’re building multiple levels, make sure that there are stairs between each level so that guests don’t fall into the pool!

3. Once you’ve decided on the size and shape of your pool deck, use stakes or string lines to mark out where all of the posts should go. The posts should be placed at least 6 inches away from any wall or fence line. This is so that they don’t get damaged when they’re buried in concrete later on. (which we’ll cover in step 4).

4. Now comes the time for concrete! You’ll want about 6 inches worth poured around each post before moving on to step 5. This will give them enough support for your pool deck.

5. You can sweep off any excess dirt and make sure that it is completely dry before adding any sealant. Once your deck is completely dry, use a paint roller with a wide nap (1/2 inch) to apply the sealant. Roll in one direction, this helps ensure that it gets into all the nooks and crannies of your deck boards so that it can do its job effectively.

Let the sealant cure for at least 24 hours before walking on it or allowing pets or children on it for extended periods of time.

How to build an above-ground pool deck

Building an above-ground pool deck is a fun project, and it’s not all that hard to do. Here are the steps you’ll need to follow.

1. Make sure you’ve got all of your materials together and ready to go. You’ll want to have a power drill, hammer, screwdriver (or two), leveler (if you’re using wood), and wood screws.

2. Find the right place for your deck. It should be close enough to the pool to make getting in easy, but far enough away that you can still enjoy some privacy.

3. Lay down a layer of 2x4s across the ground where you want your deck to go. This will help keep everything straight later on! You’ll want three rows of 2x4s laid out like an upside-down “V.” Each row should be about 18 inches apart from one another (but feel free to adjust this measurement as needed).

4. Screw each layer into place with screws about 6 inches apart. Make sure every second board has a screw in it.

5. After all layers have been secured together, use a leveler along the top edge of each layer so that they’re exactly even with one another.

Don’t forget to finish off with a good sealant after and wait for a day before filling it with water or letting people step over it.

What is the best material for pool decks?

If you choose wood or another material that needs to be stained/sealed periodically then make sure it doesn’t overlap with any surfaces. Concrete might be the best if you’re after easy maintenance and simplicity.

Other options include brick. They can be beautiful but can also present problems if you have an uneven ground or need to repoint the bricks. Wood is considered another good material if it is the kind of wood that works well with moisture. They have they’re own set of issues, including rot and termites.

Pool deck paint

The best pool deck paint option is one that can be applied to both concrete and wood. Pool decks are often made of wood. If you want to avoid the hassle of replacing or refinishing your deck, this might be an ideal solution.

Choose a pool deck paint that can also be used on existing pools as well as new ones.

What is the best color to paint a pool deck?

The best color to paint a pool deck depends on your personal preference.

If you like a bright, bold color, then choosing something like red or orange will work well for you. If you’re looking for something more subtle and elegant, then white or light gray would be an excellent choice.

Other than that, there aren’t any hard-and-fast rules about what colors work best. You can create whatever look you want with whatever colors you want!

How much does it cost to paint a pool deck?

A professional painter may charge $10-$20 per square foot for labor costs. This depends on the size of your deck and how many coats need to be applied. The cost of painting a pool deck will vary depending on the materials used, the size of your deck, and whether or not you’re hiring a professional.

If you’re buying online, the cost can range from $20 to $60 per gallon. That’s a pretty broad range, so make sure to do some research before committing to any one price.

If you’re buying from a local paint store or hardware store, the cost will also vary depending on what brand of paint they carry. Brand names can cost more than off-brand options. It’s worth shopping around for the best deal on the color and quality that works for you. Especially if you’re going to be using this product often in the future.

Concrete deck

These kinds of pool decks are an excellent choice for a pool deck. Concrete is a very durable material, which means you can count on it to last for years to come. It’s also easy to maintain. The surface of a concrete pool deck will only need cleaning every once in a while with soap and water. If you want your concrete deck to look its best all year round, consider applying a sealer before installing any finishes such as tile or pavers over top of your new concrete surface (check out our article on how to apply a sealer).

Concrete is also simple and affordable. Especially when compared with other options like wood or tile. You’ll only need basic tools like shovels and rakes for installation. Plus there are many ways for DIYers who want their own designs without paying professionals’ prices.

How to seal concrete pool decks

Concrete pool decks are built using a combination of concrete, mortar, and stone. Concrete is poured over the ground. And then leveled to create a solid surface that can hold up to the weight of people walking on it. In some cases, concrete decks may also include tile or pavers in order to paint your pool deck.

When painting your concrete pool deck

If you have a concrete pool deck, you may be wondering how to paint it. There are many different ways that people choose to do this. Some use oil-based paints while others use water-based paints.

The right prep and weather conditions can make a big difference in how long the paint lasts. There are many different types and brands of concrete pool deck paints available. They all share the same basic purpose: to keep the concrete dry and extend its longevity.

You’ll find plenty of colors available too. From light neutrals that blend well into any outdoor space through bold hues like reds/blues/greens. These add interest without being overwhelming since they’re so bright!

Acrylic Pool Deck Paint

This type of paint is great for indoor or outdoor use and will last about two years before needing touch-ups or repainting. It has a glossy finish and can be applied with an airless sprayer or roller.

Epoxy Pool Deck Paint

This kind of concrete pool deck paint has long-lasting durability that makes it ideal for pools in high-traffic areas or near the ocean where salt water may damage other types of paint over time.

It comes in both liquid form (which must be applied with an airless sprayer) and powder form (which can be brushed on).

Solid Color Pool Deck Paint

This type of concrete pool deck paint comes in many different shades and allows you to customize your color scheme without having to worry about fading over time like some other types of paints might do. However, this type of material only lasts about one year before needing touch-ups or repainting

How to paint concrete pool deck

The best thing about concrete pool decks is that you don’t actually need to paint it. But just in case you want to then follow these steps.

The first thing that you need to do is clean off any dirt or debris from the surface of your concrete deck. So that it will not interfere with the finish on top of what looks like shiny new paint after application.

You want all surfaces to look smooth and even when finished with whatever type of sealant or coating material is used underneath.

Apply the paint from one point to another. Repeat this process in the next section. Keep in mind to never change strokes. You can layer the paint up to 3x. That would mean repeating the process three times. Let it dry in between applications. Seal with a good sealant afterward for the final layer.

Travertine pool deck

Is travertine good for pool decks?

Travertine is a natural stone that is mined from quarries. It’s durable, easy to clean, and has become a popular choice for pool decks because of its natural beauty. So yes, it’s a good option if you want a material that’s not hard to maintain and that will last.

How to fix a slippery travertine pool deck

Travertine can be slippery when wet. So it’s important to keep your travertine pool deck dry after rain or cleaning with a pressure washer. Here are some ways you can make sure your travertine pool deck stays safe.

Use non-slip mats around the pool area. Especially if there are young children who might run on it or have trouble gripping them (think bathtubs). These mats will help prevent slips or falls while still looking pretty! You can also put them under furniture if needed too.

Add rubber tiles underneath any furniture legs so they don’t scratch up against hard surfaces like wood floors nearby. This will also prevent squeaking noises when moving around during dinner parties.

Stamped concrete pool deck

These kinds of pool decks are a popular choice in the South. Heat can make vinyl and composite decking materials uncomfortable to walk on. Stamped concrete is also more durable than most other pool decking materials. This makes it ideal for outdoor environments that get lots of use.

Stamped concrete may be installed over an existing concrete surface or as a new construction material. In either case, you’ll need at least a 3/4″ thick reinforced base layer underneath your stamping pattern (which typically ranges from 1/4″ to 1/2″).

Because these projects tend to be large and expensive due to their labor-intensive nature–not to mention time-consuming–you should plan ahead so you can budget accordingly for both installation costs and materials needed before beginning work on your next project.

Wood pool deck

Wood pool decks are a great choice for your backyard. Especially if you like the aesthetic feel of wood.

They’re durable and long-lasting. Wood is an extremely resilient material, so it can withstand the elements much better than other materials like concrete or stone. Plus, if you choose to stain your wood deck with a protective finish like paint or sealant, it’ll last even longer.

They’re easy to clean and maintain. Because wood doesn’t absorb water like some other materials do (like concrete), you won’t need to worry about stains from rain or pool water soaking into the boards themselves–just wipe them down with a damp cloth once in a while and you’ll be good as new.

Aluminum pool decks

Aluminum pool decks are a popular choice among homeowners because they’re durable and easy to maintain.

Most aluminum pool decks are made from extruded aluminum, which is formed by forcing molten aluminum through a die (or mold). This process creates a solid sheet of material that can then be cut into shapes for use as decking or other products. Since extruded aluminum has no voids or air pockets, it’s stronger than other types of metals such as steel or copper–and it won’t rust.

If you’re looking for something more decorative than basic flat panels, try installing an interlocking system instead. These tiles have intricate patterns carved into them so that when they’re arranged side by side in your yard, the result is an eye-catching design element without any extra labor required on your part.

Above-ground pool ladder with deck

The above-ground pool ladder with a deck is one of the most common types of the above-ground pool ladder. It’s also one of the simplest and easiest to install.

How to attach a pool ladder to a deck

To attach a pool ladder to your deck, you’ll need to drill holes into both surfaces and then screw them together with wood screws. If you want extra security, consider using longer screws or even lag bolts when attaching your above-ground pool ladder to its mounting brackets located on top of each post (this depends on what type of bracket system was purchased).

How to fill the gap between above ground pool and the deck

Wooden decks are usually the easiest to fill because they’re flexible and can be cut to fit. The best way to do this is using a circular saw with a carbide blade, which will cut through the wood without damaging it. Use caution when cutting because if you don’t hold the saw still while cutting, you may end up with some splinters. If there’s no space between two posts on your deck, you might have to buy some spacer blocks so that all four sides of the deck are even with each other.

You may also want to consider filling gaps with pavers, which are made from concrete or stone and can withstand pressure from rainwater on top of them (as well as being more durable than wood). They come in many different colors so if you’re looking for something that matches your home’s exterior color scheme (or if it doesn’t), then this might be an option for you!

Modern concrete pool decks

Modern concrete pool decks are a great choice for the homeowner who wants a stylish look that can stand up to the elements. Concrete is easy to maintain, durable, and requires minimal upkeep. The cost of installing a concrete deck can vary depending on your location and whether you hire professionals or do it yourself.

Concrete pool decks come in many shapes, styles, and colors so there’s no shortage of options when it comes time for installation. Concrete offers many advantages over other types of material used for swimming pool enclosures such as wood or composite materials (like fiberglass).

You may have heard stories about how these types of materials need regular maintenance–painting every couple of years–but with concrete, there’s no painting required. This means fewer trips out into inclement weather just so you can keep up appearances on your property. Instead, you’ll only need an occasional sweep with a broom if debris starts building up around the edges where people walk regularly.

Modern stamped concrete pool decks

You can add a modern stamp to your pool deck with concrete. Stamped concrete is a type of paving that uses patterns, colors, and textures to create designs on the surface. This can be done by hand or machine, depending on how intricate you want your pattern to look. The process involves first mixing up the concrete and then applying it onto the ground in layers until you have covered all areas of interest with this material. Once dried out and cured properly (which takes about 7 days), you’ll have yourself an eye-catching addition.

A lot of people love this type because it adds depth to their outdoor space without costing too much money. However, there are downsides too such as having less traction compared to other types. Most stamps do not provide traction mainly because they’re made from sand which doesn’t grip well onto surfaces as wood does.

Pool deck pavers

Pool deck pavers are a type of pool decking that is made from interlocking concrete bricks. These pavers are available in different shapes and sizes, allowing you to create a custom design for your pool area.

Type

The most popular types of pool deck pavers include tile-shaped and square-shaped pavers. Tile-shaped pavers may have rounded corners or square corners. They can also be either smooth or rough on top. Square-shaped paver styles come with rounded edges or straight edges.

These options will affect how much water flows off the surface as well as how well they withstand wear over time (rounded edges tend to hold up better than straight ones).

Cost

The cost of installing this type of patio depends on several factors including whether you do it yourself or hire someone else.

It will vary depending on where you live (your local labor rate). The price will change depending on the materials you need.

In general, though expect somewhere between $5-$10 per square foot depending on whether it’s just labor costs involved versus both materials plus labor costs involved.
